ELA Research Day

ELA Research Day 2021, April 15th, Ljubliana, Slovenia

The ELA Research Day is organized bi-annually as part of the EUROLOG by the European Logistics Association (ELA) in cooperation with a national member association. This year this is the Slovenian Logistics Association. Due to the pandemic situation it takes place as an online event. The ELA Research Day offers a platform for the presentation and discussion of actual research results that are relevant for Logistics/Supply Chain Management. The program is developed by the ELA Research Committee. It contains always a general part and a part focusing on regional aspects of the inviting national logistics association.

This year the general focus is on “New logistics technologies “. Often those are accompanied by a hype and their impact on logistics/supply chain management is not obvious. An acknowledged expert in this research field, Prof. René de Koster, will speak about “Promises and Failures of new logistics technologies”.His presentation will be followed by a panel discussion concerning the “Impact of new Technologies on Human Resources in Logistics/Supply Chain”.

The regional aspect covers “Logistics in the Balkan Region “ with the presentations of three acknowledged experts in this field of research. Prof. Dragan Cisic will speak about “Maritime Corridor in the context of the New Silk Road”, a topic not only relevant for European Logistics but also of geopolitical importance. The other two presentations concern the often neglected research of logistics in rural areas Prof. Marija Bogotaj will speak about the “Challenges of Logistics in the Silver Economy” in this are. Prof. Andrej Lisec will speak about “Packaging and Short Supply Cains in Slovenian Organic Farming."

Every two years, the European Logistics Association (ELA) stages an ELA Research Conference on the eve of the EUROLOG. The aim of the conference is to present the latest research findings of leading Europe- an research institutes. In view of their topicality and relevance for science and practice, ELA’s “Research Committee” had in 2012 chosen the two themes “Humanitarian Logistics” and “Innovations and Supply Chain Management”. Up-and-coming scientists had the opportunity to put their research findings forward for discussion in the PhD Candidates Workshop and gain ideas for dissertation projects through an interdisciplinary dialogue with top European scientists.

Session 1: Humanitarian Logistics? The BVL working group “Humanitarian Logistics” underlined in its work that there is a need to improve collaboration and partnerships. Inter- national researchers will present and discuss their findings. The session was moderated by Prof. Nathalie Fabbe-Costes (University Aix-Marseille). The speakers were Professors Marianne Jahre (Lund University and BI Norwegian Business School), Gyöngyi Kovács (Hanken School of Economics Helsinki) and Bernd Hellingrath (University Münster).

Session 2: Innovation and Supply Chain Management?Top management has recognised the strategic importance of supply chain management and understands how crucial innovations are for future development. What are state-of-the-art concepts for this development? This session was moderated by Prof. Hans-Christian Pfohl (TU Darmstadt). The speakers were Professors Pietro Evangelista (University of Naples Federico II) and Jan van den Ende (Erasmus University Rotterdam). A third speaker, Florian Kammergruber (TU München) was choosen from and invited by the PhD students.

In each session was a panel discussion with the speakers and two invited PhD students.

The feedback from professors and students for both sessions was very positive. The next ELA Research Day will be organized together with the EUROLOG in 2014.
